However, we’ve found that when designing a tangible user interface, it’s best to start with a solid diagram—a 3D “sketch” created using simple construction materials. In the early stages of research and concept development, solid diagrams are more suitable for rapid reconfiguration and exploration than pencil sketches. They also let us analyze modes of correspondence between physical structures and abstract-information structures. Furthermore, because we can manipulate these diagrams, they help us explore usability properties and certain design trade-offs.

Tangible Spatial Augmented Reality in Rapid Prototyping: Multiple and Differential Tangible Object Manipulation and Interaction

0.1 Abstract Tangible Interface Objects underpin the interactions between users and a SAR environment. When utilizing SAR for rapid-prototyping work flows, particularly when the subject of the prototyping is a user-input centric design, the role of the Tangible Interface Objects is crucial. A Tangible Interface Object with form or functionality that does not reflect that of its real-world count...

Using ARToolKit Markers to Build Tangible Prototypes and Simulate Other Technologies

Quick prototyping of tangible user interfaces is currently hampered by availability of toolkits and the double challenge of tinkering with software and hardware. While software may be downloaded, hardware cannot. As a work-around for a class on experimental prototyping of tangible appliances we utilized the ARToolKit that tracks optical markers. By creatively adapting it, our students quickly d...

Rapidly Prototyping Marker Based Tangible User Interfaces

Tangible user interfaces (TUIs) can create engaging and useful interactive systems. However, along with the power of these interfaces comes challenges; they are often so specialized and novel that building a TUI system involves working at a low level with custom hardware and software. As a result the community of people that are capable of creating TUIs is limited. With this project we aim to m...

Simulation and Digital Prototyping of Tangible User Interfaces

Physical prototyping is an important part in research and development of tangible user interfaces (TUIs). On the way from the idea to a working prototype, hardware prototypes usually have to be crafted repeatedly in numerous iterations. However, this can be very timeand cost-intensive when non-standard, expensive hardware components are part of the design. This brings us to think about digital ...
